Profile Educated in Japan and has BA from Japan Women’s University and MSc, International Relations from London School of Economics and Political Science. She entered Dentsu Institute for Human Studies in 1987. Before going to New York with her husband, Shinichi Kitaoka, in 2004, when he was politically appointed to Deputy Permanent Representative (Ambassador) to the UN, she was a research director of a think tank within Dentsu Inc. She wrote a few books including “Why Japanese Women Do Not Have Babies” and a number of articles for Japanese magazines. She was given “the New Opinion leaders” award by the Yomiuri Newspaper in 1997. Shinichi and Rieko set up NPO called Millennium Promise Japan (MPJ) in May 2008. The purpose of MPJ is to help the independence of the village people in Millennium Villages of 10 countries in Sub-Sahara Area in Africa, in order to support the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations．She has visited 13 countries in Africa.
